Frequently Asked Plumbing Questions

As your trusted residential and commercial plumber, we’re here to answer your call and all your plumbing questions. Here you will find answers to some common plumbing questions to help you make the best decisions for your home or business.

Can I Prevent Common Plumbing Issues?

While wear and tear are unavoidable, performing regular maintenance and routine inspections can help you prevent costly damages and keep your plumbing systems and equipment running better for longer. We recommend you regularly check your pipes for signs of leaks and corrosion, inspect your water heater annually, be mindful of what you put down the drain and don’t put off addressing drips and slow-moving drains.

What Do I Do When My Toilet Overflows?

Remain calm, lots of things can cause a toilet to overflow. First, locate the valve behind the toilet and turn it clockwise to turn off the water to the toilet. Clean up any spilled water to prevent damage. If the toilet is clogged, you can try plunging the toilet. If there’s a foreign object in the toilet, try removing it with a gloved hand. If you are unsuccessful, your next step should be to contact a plumber. They will be able to address the underlying issue.

How Can I Stop My Faucet from Leaking?

Leaky faucets are a common plumbing issue, often caused by worn-out gaskets, valves, or O-rings. If you are feeling handy, you can pick up replacement parts at your local hardware store and replace them yourself. If that doesn’t solve the problem or if you are unsure on how to install them, you should call your trusted plumber for an accurate diagnosis and repair.

When Should I Call a Plumber?

Always call immediately during a plumbing emergency, such as a burst pipe, sewage backup, major leak or any other situation that could cause significant damage or health risks. Small problems, like slow moving drains and small leaks can quickly turn into major issues if repairs are ignored and should always be addressed sooner rather than later.

What Should I Do If a Pipe Bursts?

Burst pipes require immediate action. First, shut off the main water supply to prevent any further flooding. If you can safely, you should turn off the electricity to any areas affected by the burst pipe. Then, call an emergency plumber in your area.

How Do I Unclog a Blocked Drain?

A slow-moving or clogged up drain can be caused by hair, soap scum, grease or other debris. Before calling a plumber, you can try dislodging the blockage with a plunger or a drain snake, which can reach deeper blockages. We don’t recommend over-the-counter drain cleaning products because depending on the source of the blockage and your pipes, they could make the problem worse. If the clog is too far down the line or you are experiencing frequent clogs, go ahead and call a plumber. Persistent or frequent clogs could indicate a more significant issue that requires the assistance of a professional plumber.

How Can I Troubleshoot a Broken Garbage Disposal?

Start by turning off the disposal and disconnecting it from the power source. Carefully check the unit for any obstructions, such as small objects or food particles and remove any blockages. Check the breaker and reset the disposal. If the issue persists, it’s best to contact a plumber to avoid further damage.
